How to Wash Rayon Without Shrinking It

How to Wash Rayon: The Short Answer

Wash rayon in cold water with a mild liquid detergent — by hand, or on a delicate cycle with a low spin. Never use a hot tumble dryer. Rayon loses roughly half its strength when it is wet, so it has to be handled gently: no wringing, no twisting, no bleach, no long soaks. Dry it flat or hang it in the shade, and iron it on low heat with steam while it is still slightly damp.

Follow those rules and rayon keeps its drape, its colour and its shape for years. Break them — hot water, a hot dryer, a hard spin — and the garment will shrink, stiffen or stretch out of shape.

Why Rayon Needs Its Own Rules

Rayon is made from wood pulp cellulose that has been chemically reshaped into a fibre. That is what gives it the soft, silky hand feel of silk at a fraction of the price — but it also makes the fibre much weaker when wet.

Two practical rules follow from that one fact:

  • Agitation is the enemy. A fast spin or a hard wring can stretch and distort a wet rayon garment before the fibre has the strength to resist.
  • Heat is the enemy. Heat plus movement is what makes rayon shrink. The fibre relaxes, the fabric contracts, and it does not always relax back.

You will also see rayon sold as viscose, modal, lyocell or Tencel. They all sit in the same family and the care rules below apply to all of them. Lyocell is the toughest of the group; plain viscose needs the most care.

Does Rayon Shrink?

Yes — rayon can shrink, and it is the most common complaint about the fabric. There are two separate things going on, and only one of them is your fault:

  • Relaxation shrinkage. Most viscose is pulled under tension while it is being made. The first wash lets the fibre relax and the garment settles — usually by a small amount. This is normal, and it is why a rayon dress can feel slightly smaller after its first wash even when you did everything right.
  • Heat shrinkage. Hot water or a hot tumble dryer makes the fibre contract much further. This one is entirely avoidable, and it is usually permanent.

The good news is that cold water and air drying prevent almost all of it. If a garment was pre-shrunk at the factory, relaxation shrinkage will be minimal from the start.

There is a mirror-image problem worth knowing about too: rayon can also grow on a hanger. It is a heavy fibre with little memory of its own, so a soaking-wet rayon dress left hanging by its shoulders can stretch at the neckline. Support the weight — dry it flat, or on a padded hanger.

Hand Washing Rayon, Step by Step

  1. Fill a basin with cold water and a capful of mild liquid detergent. Never add chlorine bleach.
  2. Submerge the garment and squeeze it gently through the water for a minute or two. Do not scrub, and do not twist.
  3. Soak for no more than 10–15 minutes. Rayon dyes can bleed if the garment is left sitting in the water.
  4. Drain the basin and rinse in cold water until it runs clear. Do not lift the garment out by one shoulder while it is heavy with water.
  5. Press the water out against the side of the basin — or better, roll the garment in a clean towel and press. The towel takes most of the water with no twisting at all.

Machine Washing Rayon (If the Care Label Allows It)

Machine washing is fine for everyday rayon as long as you set it up properly:

  • Turn the garment inside out and close any zips and buttons.
  • Put small or delicate pieces into a mesh laundry bag.
  • Choose the delicate or hand-wash cycle with cold water and a low spin speed. If your machine only offers a fast spin, skip the spin and press the water out by hand instead.
  • Wash with similar colours. Rayon sheds dye more readily than cotton in its first few washes.
  • Skip the fabric softener. Rayon does not need it, and softener leaves a coating that makes the fabric go limp.

When in doubt, hand wash. A structured rayon blazer, a pleated skirt or anything lined is safest at the dry cleaner.

Drying Rayon Without Shrinking It

This is the step that decides whether the garment survives, so it is worth getting right:

  • Lay it flat on a drying rack or a clean towel, and reshape it to its original dimensions while it is still damp.
  • Or hang it on a padded hanger in the shade. Never in direct sun, which fades the dye.
  • Do not use a tumble dryer on a rayon piece you care about. If you genuinely must, use the lowest heat setting and take the garment out while it is still slightly damp.
  • Keep rayon away from radiators, hot pipes, and anywhere you would not put your own hand.

Ironing and Steaming Rayon

Rayon presses beautifully — it simply needs a low setting and a little patience.

  • Iron inside out, or through a pressing cloth, so you do not leave shiny marks on the face of the fabric.
  • Use the low to medium heat setting, with steam. Rayon can scorch and glaze at high temperatures.
  • Iron while the garment is slightly damp, or steam it and let it finish drying on the hanger. A hand steamer is usually easier than an iron on draped cuts.

What to Avoid: The Short List

Do not Why it matters
Hot water Drives heat shrinkage and sets creases in
Hot tumble drying The single biggest cause of shrunken rayon
Chlorine bleach Attacks the cellulose fibre — it yellows and weakens
Wringing or twisting Wet rayon is weak; it stretches and stays stretched
Long soaking Dye bleeds and settles unevenly
Hanging a wet dress by its shoulders The weight stretches the neckline and shoulders

Rayon Care at a Glance

Step Rayon / Viscose / Modal / Lyocell
Water temperature Cold
Wash method Hand wash, or delicate cycle
Detergent Mild liquid — no bleach, no softener
Spin Low, or skip it entirely
Drying Flat or hanging in the shade — never hot
Ironing Low to medium, inside out, with steam

The Bottom Line

Rayon is not a fragile fabric. It is sensitive to two specific things: heat, and agitation while wet. Take both out of your wash routine and a rayon garment will hold its shape, its colour and its drape for years. Leave them in, and you will meet the shrinking problem everybody warns you about.
